In the spring of 2024, 12 students and faculty from the College of Education’s Department of Early and Special Education attended a study tour in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Led by Director of the Boise State Children’s Center and adjunct faculty member Nichole Billetz, students on the tour spent three days immersed in the schools and community of Reggio Emilia. They learned about the area’s philosophy, visited infant/toddler programs and preschools, connected with educators from across the country and saw what democracy in early care and education settings can look like.
“Seeing the schools in Reggio helped me to remember that while the environment is the third teacher, and should be filled with rich opportunities for children, our relationships within the classroom community are the heart of our work,” student participant Kaitlyn Erb said. “How we see and connect with children and families informs everything else that we do and I’ve noticed that I’m reflecting on the child’s perspective more frequently throughout each day after this experience.”
Billetz and College of Education faculty member Juli Pool will be co-leading this trip again March 21-27, 2025. Students and faculty from any degree program are invited to join them. Space is limited and preference is given to seniors and graduate students.
