Michael Allen, professor of political science in the School of Public Service, has published an article on the correlation between U.S. overseas military presence and the likelihood of a coup d’état in the host country.
US Military Deployments and the Risk of Coup d’État appeared in the January, 2023 edition of Foreign Policy Analysis and was co-authored with three Master of Political Science students, including Valeryn Shepherd of Boise State. Allen’s research demonstrates that the presence of American troops decreases the likelihood of a coup by supporting the host government and its security apparatus and also by decreasing the benefits of a successful coup to conspirators.
