Cheong Kim, research scholar for the Idaho Policy Institute in the School of Public Service, published an article in the Oct. 28 Journal of Environmental Planning and Management.
Co-authored with Sung-Wook Kwon and Daniel Benjamin Bailey,“Zoning to enhance local sustainability: why local governments choose to use sustainability-focused land use tools” details the relationship between land use regulations and sustainability policy at the municipal level. The authors also explore land use policy instruments and their link to local sustainability policy, as well as key institutional and economic factors that influence a city’s decision to adopt more or fewer land use regulations.
The authors find that land use regulations are more likely to be used to enhance sustainability in cities that are facing increasing population growth and environmental stress and in cities that operate under council-manager form of government rather than under a mayor.
