Tom Hillard’s article “Burying the Body: Pandemic and Public Health in Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables” was recently published in a special issue of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review.
Hillard is a professor in the English department.
The issue’s focus is Pandemics 101: Hawthorne’s Advice for Prevention and Survival. Hillard’s article explores the ways that Hawthorneâs 1851 novel incorporates contemporary public health discourses related to disease, changing burial practices, and the cholera pandemics of the 1830s and 1840s.
