Boise State’s School of the Arts is launching a new Certificate in Creative Art Technology, available to students starting in Fall 2025.

The certificate will prepare students for successful creative careers in a modern professional landscape that is integrating emerging technologies. It will create a clear path for students to learn functional technological literacies from an arts perspective.

“The Certificate in Creative Arts Technology reflects our commitment to fostering innovation at the intersection of art and technology,” said Amanda Ashley, director of the School of the Arts. “By providing students across the university with hands-on experience in digital tools and emerging creative practices, this program aligns with our School of the Arts mission to equip future artists, designers and creators with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving creative economy. It’s an opportunity for students to expand their creative potential and engage with new forms of artistic expression that will help shape the future of the arts.”

The certificate was made possible thanks to support from a College of Arts and Sciences Innovation Lab grant. The Innovation Lab supported faculty as they incubated new ideas for curriculum and academic programming in the college.

The grant supported a School of the Arts Curricular Convention, centered around the theme of emerging technology. Faculty met during the summer of 2024 to discuss new technologies most impactful for careers their graduates would enter. They worked on new academic programming to prepare students for those emerging technologies, including the Certificate in Creative Arts Technology.

“I’m grateful to Dean Durham for investing in this project through the Innovation Lab,” Ashley said. “This funding allowed us to bring together 30 faculty, staff and chairs from across the School of the Arts for a summer convention. This certificate is the manifestation of our intentional and thoughtful collaboration, and we look forward to launching it in Fall 2025.”

Students can add the certificate to their degree program with just 12 credits, spread across the four departments in the School of the Arts: Art, Design and Visual Studies; Games, Interactive and Mobile Technology; Music; and Theatre, Film and Creative Writing.
