Apply to be a Learning Analytics Fellow

Boise State’s eCampus Center is launching a Learning Analytics Fellowship to equip faculty with the skills to leverage Canvas Analytics in their online courses. Through a structured “Learn, Do, Teach” model, participants will explore the responsible use of learning data, apply analytics to their online courses and share their insights with colleagues.

For the 2025-26 cohort, online faculty will use the reports provided in Canvas about their students’ Canvas usage, assignment submissions, discussion posts and grades to monitor students’ progress and identify if and when particular students need personalized feedback, targeted support or additional resources.

No background in math or statistics? No problem – this fellowship is designed for faculty from all disciplines, including those without any experience in data analysis. The focus is on practical strategies for using data.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship will take  two-three hours per week, and fellows are eligible for a stipend.

Summer 2025 (Training Phase)

Faculty will participate in an interactive online, asynchronous summer seminar, engaging in readings, discussions and Zoom sessions to build their understanding of learning analytics. Topics include ethical data use, best practices and how to interpret and communicate insights from Canvas Analytics without needing advanced math skills.

Fall 2025 (Implementation Phase)

Fellows will apply what they’ve learned to their own online courses, actively using Canvas Analytics to enhance student engagement. Participants will continue discussions, attend check-in meetings and reflect on their experiences.

Spring 2026 (Teaching Phase)

Fellows will share their expertise by leading a training session for their department or college with support from eCampus and Learning Technology Solutions. They will also collaborate to create a practical guide to assist other faculty in using learning analytics to support student success.

Key Points

  • Designed for all online instructors – no background in statistics or data required.
  • Gain hands-on experience using learning analytics to improve student outcomes.
  • Build confidence in interpreting and applying data to online teaching.
  • Join a collaborative group of faculty focused on student engagement.

The fellowship is an excellent opportunity for faculty who want to enhance their teaching, support student success and help shape resources that will benefit colleagues across campus.
