Margaret Sass, a lecturer in the School of the Digital Future, presented at the AI in Higher Education Symposium Australia & New Zealand on February 6, 2025

The symposium, hosted at the University of Sydney, brought together thought leaders, educators and researchers to explore the transformative impact of artificial intelligence in higher education. With an unprecedented 2,800 participants registered, this hybrid conference underscored the growing global interest in AI’s role in shaping the future of learning.

Sass presented “AI and Community-Based Learning.” Her session highlighted an innovative approach to leveraging generative AI in community-based learning courses, where students use AI to identify projects, plan communications and simulate community interactions. This method enables students to develop professional competencies through AI-assisted project management and risk-free practice scenarios before engaging with real communities.

The AI in Higher Education Symposium featured a dynamic mix of in-person and virtual sessions, ensuring accessibility for a global audience.
