Students in SPAN 482, Spanish for Healthcare, collaborated with the Ronald McDonald House of Charities to translate their manual for Spanish-speaking volunteers, titled “Help Around the House.” This collaboration allowed students to develop their translation and linguistic skills while serving their community. The Ronald McDonald House’s volunteer coordinator, Stephanie Meredith, shared that the students’ hard work will “improve experiences for both volunteers and guest families.”
The courses SPAN 481, Introduction to Court Interpretation, and SPAN 482, Spanish for Healthcare, both taught by Fatima Cornall, frequently work with community partners to provide students with meaningful experiential learning opportunities that also benefit the community at large.
Additionally, the World Languages Spanish Club, led by student Coulter Sprague and advisor Manuel Gomez, organized an evening of brown bag decorating so that families can take snacks to the hospital when visiting their sick or injured children, with bright and inspiring messages in Spanish.
