Leif Nelson, executive director of Learning Technology Solutions and Research Computing, and Casey Kennington, associate professor in the computer science department have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation.
The award, in the amount of $690,694 will allow Boise State to increase computing resources to continue advancing research and education using artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The university has responded to the dramatic changes in AI by encouraging exploration and experimentation. Many researchers already use data science and AI tools, but in recent years, data science and AI tools and models have become more complex, requiring additional resources.
This project has three main parts:
- Update infrastructure that supports data science, machine learning and AI.
- Using the new infrastructure, continue research that uses AI tools. Research projects include improving small language models, modeling the human voice for marketing, AI in business education, making integrated circuits more energy efficient, and modeling weather, oceans and materials. This will be done through hosting local generative AI models for the campus community to use.
- Additionally, students and faculty will explore AI through course projects. The projects will enable students to be more prepared for an AI-driven world.
Anyone who wants to access and use computing resources on campus, including these new ones, can contact researchcomputing@boisestate.edu.
