Ross Burkhart, a political science professor at the School of Public Service, was quoted in an article by PolitiFact, which researches the accuracy of claims made by public figures.

The article – “Economists say J.D. Vance is wrong about benefits of tariffs outweighing negatives” – examines the accuracy of quotes from J.D. Vance, a U.S. senator and Republican vice presidential candidate.

His quote involves the overall effect of tariffs on economic activity: “Tariffs artificially raise the cost of doing business, which depresses overall economic production in the form of lower gross domestic product, artificially higher prices, and fewer goods sold. For the consumer, this means a reduction in purchasing power.”

The article examined several pieces of evidence and interviewed several experts on this topic. It concluded that the quotes from Senator Vance are rated as “False.”
