Effective July 1, 2024, the Department of Counselor Education in now part of the College of Health Sciences’ School of Allied Health Sciences. The department was previously housed in the College of Education.
“While this change will physically move counselor education from one college to another, it does not preclude us from collaborating to benefit both colleges and all students,” James Satterfield, Jr., dean of the College of Education said. “We will continue to work together to advance our research and other scholarly activities. We look forward to the future as we honor our past, while advancing the mission of the university.”

For many years, the Colleges of Education and Health Sciences have shared responsibility and oversight for the Institute for the Study of Behavioral Health and Addiction. The institute, led by Diana Doumas, professor of counselor education, will now be housed solely in the College of Health Sciences. The institute serves both Boise State and the community by providing training, professional development opportunities and program evaluation services for behavioral health and addiction prevention and treatment for professionals.
The institute also houses the Idaho Regional Alcohol Drug Awareness Resource Center (RADAR), the only clearinghouse for substance abuse prevention and addiction treatment print, video and electronic resources and resource referral for citizens residing in the state of Idaho.
About the Department of Counselor Education
The Department of Counselor Education offers a 60-credit Master of Arts in Counseling that prepares graduate students to become licensed professional counselors. Students are required to enroll in one of two cognate areas: School Counseling and Addiction Counseling.
The department also offers a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision. This program prepares counselor educators and leaders in the field of counselor education and supervision.
All the programs, including both cognate areas, are Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs accredited.
