Lisa Brady, chair of the history department, gave the keynote address “Vicious Cycle: War and Environmental Change in History” at the international conference “Standing on a Cliff: War, Peace and Environment in History” in Beijing, China, in May. The conference included papers by over 20 scholars from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.
In addition to presenting her research at the conference, Brady participated in opening the new Center for Environmental Humanities and Disaster Mitigation on May 20 at Shanxi University in Taiyuan, China, where she was appointed visiting professor.
Brady is an internationally recognized expert and founder of environmental military history. She served as editor of Environmental History, the flagship journal of her field, and currently sits on several editorial boards for journals and book series focused on military history and environmental history. She is editor-in-chief of Oxford Bibliographies Online-Environmental History and the series founder and editor of the book series “War, Conflict and Environment” through Leiden University Press.
