The Institute for Advancing American Values, in partnership with the Heterodox Academy Campus Community at Boise State, is inviting all faculty and staff to a series of happy hour gatherings to discuss issues facing campus and higher education. The next event is from 4:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19 in the Bronco Zone at the Stueckle Sky Center. All are welcome to attend and enjoy beverages, food and community building.
The Oct. 19 event will address campus freedom of speech issues ahead of the Distinguished Lecturer Series event with speakers Robert George and Cornel West. Those coming to the happy hour are encouraged to read two items:
- The Chicago Statement (Report of the Committee on Freedom of Expression), and
- Robert George’s “Universities Shouldn’t be Ideological Churches” essay in The Atlantic.
The conversation will be structured around responses to the readings and the question drawn from George’s essay, “Should the university (or units within the university) ever take positions on challenging issues?”
The Campus Conversations series continues on Nov. 2, 16 and 30 at the same time and place.
