The Race and Culture Committee of the Guild of Psychotherapists, London, U.K. recently invited Gautam Basu Thakur, associate professor and director of the critical theory program in the Department of English, to speak at the Decolonizing Psychoanalysis Seminar series. The year-long seminar series aims to promote conversations about psychoanalysis by initiating transatlantic dialogues between academics and psychotherapists.
Basu Thakur’s presented his talk, “Occupying Psychoanalysis in a Post-Colonial World: Fanon’s ‘zone of nonbeing’ and the subject of racism,” on April 23, 2022. In it, he discussed an ontology-based approach for rethinking racism and race-relations in the global world via the writings of Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan and Frantz Fanon.
