Stephanie Lenhart, assistant research professor and senior research associate at Energy Policy Institute, and Dalten Fox, graduate student in public policy and administration, published the article “Structural Power in Sustainability Transitions: Case Studies of Energy Storage Integration Into Regional Transmission Organization Decision Processes” in the Dec. 2 edition of Frontiers. The article compares three case studies of energy storage integration as efforts to promote more sustainable and equitable energy systems are disrupting economic and political relationships, with issues of power and politics now central themes in energy sustainability transition research, the authors said.
Lenhart and Fox also authored “Participatory democracy in dynamic contexts: A review of regional transmission organization governance in the United States” for the Jan. 2022 edition of Energy Research & Social Science. This article examines the seven regional transmission organizations which ensure open access to transmission, manage wholesale electricity markets, and maintain transmission system reliability across the U.S.
