Gautam Basu Thakur, an associate professor of English, is one of the guest editors of the “Cluster on Teaching Theory in Global Contexts” section of the journal Pedagogy: Critical Approaches to Teaching Literature, Language, Composition, and Culture. In the introduction that he co-authored, Basu Thakur advocates for revaluation of what is taught as critical theory, and how critical theory is taught, so that teaching theory can mesh more directly with the experiences and struggles of students from diverse backgrounds and different geopolitical locations. Additionally, these students’ experiences should be prioritized as starting points for theoretical readings instead of convincing them that the readings will help resolve their differential experiences and struggles, the authors said.
