Max Davis-Johnson, associate vice president of information technology, co-presented “Leveraging Data Lakes in Higher Education” with John Rome, deputy chief information officer at Arizona State University, at the annual West Coast CIO Cloud Forum at the University of Arizona in January in Tucson.
Johnson and Rome explained the concept of data lakes as a single store of all enterprise data used for tasks such as visualization, advanced analytics, machine learning and reporting.
Johnson also shared Boise State’s Data Lake Proof of Concept project in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, involving Office of Information Technology staff extracting 13 million rows of student course information and utilizing a variety of machine-learning services to predict selected Extended Studies course demand.
