Cody Jorgensen published an article in the Oct. 4 edition of Sage Open.
“Badges and Bongs: Police Officer Attitudes toward Drugs” found that officers’ individual characteristics such as education attainment and political ideology have a much stronger effect on attitudes towards drugs than policing characteristics such as rank or experience in the vice/narcotics unit.
Additionally, about 40 percent of responding officers indicated that their attitudes towards drug use and drug users became more punitive as a result of becoming a police officer.
