Cody Jorgensen published an article titledĀ “Badges and Brothels: Police Officers’ Attitudes Toward Prostitution” in the July 15 edition of the journal Frontiers in Sociology. The article states that the way police perceive prostitution is likely to influence how they enforce laws prohibiting it. Jorgensen wrote that police officers tend to view prostitution as a problem that leads to more serious crime. In addition, officers’ personality characteristics such as education, political affiliation and religious beliefs have a much stronger impact on how punitive they are toward prostitution compared to policing characteristics such as rank, years of experience and service in the vice/narcotics unit.
