Each year Boise State University’s MLK Living Legacy Celebration kicks off with the Day of Greatness March and Rally. The 2018 event will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom.
Everyone is invited to make posters to carry down Capitol Boulevard to a rally on the Statehouse steps. Materials will be provided to make posters and student speakers will be featured at the rally.
The celebration continues with a keynote address by Melissa Harris-Perry at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22. Harris-Perry is the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University where she is the faculty director of the Pro Humanitate Institute and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center. In addition, she is the author of the award-winning “Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought,” and “Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.”
The annual celebration works to evoke in students — in everyone — a passion for human rights, and to use Dr. King’s example of positive change while respecting others’ unique individuality and beliefs. The planning committee notes that one of the best ways to celebrate Dr. King’s contributions is to reflect on how his work has impacted your own life, and consider how you too can improve the lives of others within your community and worldwide.
