Bio

John joined Boise State University in March 2020 as a Research Program Manager, administratively reporting to the Division of Research and Economic Development but assigned full-time to the Quantum DNA research group. In this capacity, he assists the group with managing its various federal research awards, which involves report writing, assessing and pursuing new funding opportunities, outreach, budget management, personnel management, and developing and implementing management frameworks for the group’s data management and intellectual property needs. In addition, John mentors some of the group’s undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral research fellows.

Prior to coming to Boise State and since April 2016, John was the Program Director for the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) located at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, a federal government extramural research program that addresses the wildland fire science needs of managers, practitioners, and policy-makers. Previous to this role, he managed the Resource Conservation and Climate Change program area for the Department of Defense’s (DoD), Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) for 10 years. While at DoD, he also managed large interdisciplinary teams to create actionable science for end-users and represented DoD on the 3rd National Climate Assessment. He was a Convening Lead Author on one of its chapters. In combination, these positions provided John almost 14 years of program management experience related to federal research programs and managing large interdisciplinary projects. Earlier in his career, John was the Fort Benning Project Manager and Sonoran Desert Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy. As a result, he has had significant experience in developing and managing large-scale natural resource planning efforts on federal lands and integrating execution and outcomes across many lines of research to better serve end-user needs. Finally, John is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a nuclear-trained officer in the U.S. submarine force. His graduate degrees are from Washington State University in Biology (MS) and Zoology (Ph.D.).
