March 10, 2016 – Randy Bunnis and Chris Siepert from Environmental Health/Safety & Sustainabilty gave the Nanoscale Materials & Device group training on fire extinguishers. After a classroom lecture, they moved to the hands-on practice session. They discussed when to use a fire extinguisher, the different types of extinguishers and their uses, and then gave the group an opportunity to put out a live fire with a standard ABC fire extinguisher. The fire was created by bubbling propane up through water and then lighting the propane with a road flare. Once the fire was extinguished, the propane was shut off. Everyone appreciated this hand-on training!
