General Assistance

Whether it’s setting up dorm rooms, staffing a check-in desk at an event, picking up or dropping off fellows at the airport, helping us set up events, there a wide variety of assistance is needed. If you want to be involved, this is a great way to help!

Time commitment will vary.

Details

Airport pickup and dorm check-in

Assistance will be required for picking up fellows from the airport and helping them check into their dorms. Most will will be traveling from their homes in Africa so will have been in transit for up to 20 hours. The combination of excitement, exhaustion and nervousness can be overwhelming to even the most experienced of travelers. Airport and Dorm Assistants are the warm welcome at the end of a long road!

You will be stationed at either the Airport or the dorms, if at the Airport you will meet the Fellows, help them pick up their baggage and stay with them until they are picked up to be taken to the Dorms. Dorm Volunteers will help Fellows unload, show them around their rooms and assist with getting them checked in.

Drivers

Assistance with transportation of Fellows is of high importance. Mandela staff and volunteers can help with driving the fellows to site visits, home hosted dinners and more.

Grocery shopping assistants

Fellows are housed in the Lincoln Townhomes on campus and have access to a full kitchen. Boise State will supply a few kitchen staples and cleaning supplies but Fellows will need to “stock up” on groceries when they arrive. Grocery Shopping Assistants will provide an introduction to American groceries, packaging and pricing. These volunteers should be familiar with stores in the vicinity of campus and be able to explain the pros and cons of each, specifically Albertsons, Winco, Whole Foods and Walgreens. You will be assigned three to four Fellows and will pick them up, take them shopping and return them to campus.
