Taking oral histories of our older citizens for City of Star’s upcoming History Museum.

This position is an unpaid internship or volunteer position and helps build the student’s resume. Lynn Davis, a member of Star’s History Committee, will supervise the student(s), whether an intern or volunteer. She supervised more than 70 students over her career as director of communications of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources. She is happy to be a reference for students entering the workforce or going on to graduate school. Many of her students greatly benefitted from the work projects and moved on to more opportunities. The City of Star intends to create a Star History Museum to tell the story of its early settlers before they pass on. Star was a farm town and many of the early residents came from the Midwest during the Great Depression and Drought. We would like the intern/volunteer to determine the digital way we should collect the videos. In addition to the video, the student should prepare a written oral history, similar to the model Lynn has prepared. There are several people in Star we would like to interview soon. It is an ideal project for students to work in pairs of twos. We will acknowledge credit of the students. We would like to share the oral histories with Idaho Public TV to use in their series on Idaho. The time is flexible for now, fall, and spring semesters. Students should have good communication/inteviewing skills, relate easily to people, be familiar enough with video and AP style to produce a video approximately 5 minutes long and a written oral history that will be used in Star’s Museum. contact Lynn at davisl@vt.edu, 540.819.5940
