Dr. Gail Shuck presented “Toward a Linguistically Responsive Writing Placement Program,” co-authored with Dr. Nicole Brun-Mercer, at the Symposium on Second Language Writing held at Arizona State University. The presentation outlined the critical partnerships that English Language Support Programs have created over the last two decades, allowing the gathering of much-needed data as a step toward an equitable first-year writing placement process that accounts for the linguistic diversity of the student population. Dr. Shuck also co-facilitated a well-attended discussion with Dr. Tanita Saenkhum of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville on the genre of the external tenure review letter and the complexities of this genre within the small field of second-language writing.
