Albertsons Library has signed “Read and Publish” agreements with three publishers: Cambridge University Press; Company of Biologists; and the American Chemical Society (ACS).
“Read and Publish” agreements are a type of “transformative” agreement where costs of these agreements are negotiated based on the payment that covers subscriptions to the publisher’s content (Read) and the amount of open access publishing (Publish) submitted by university authors.
They allow for authors to publish open access in Gold or Hybrid Open Access journals without additional article processing charges (APCs). This primer by Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe about transformative agreements includes definitions of different types of agreements.
Cambridge University Press and Company of Biologists allow for unlimited, no charge to the author, open access publishing for 2021-2023. The ACS Offset Benefit Agreement allows for 19 article publishing tokens. The tokens zero out normal article processing charges for open access publishing and must be used on articles accepted in 2021.
We encourage all interested authors to find more information about these agreements and details about eligibility on our “Read and Publish” guide. If you are interested in exploring other Open Access publishing options, author rights, and our institutional repository, ScholarWorks, please contact Elisabeth Shook, Head, Scholarly Communications and Data Management.
The Library is evaluating the time and personnel investment needed to manage these agreements; author interest; and sustainability. We do not plan on signing additional agreements this year. We feel it is important to understand how these types of agreements work, especially in light of ongoing budgetary constraints caused by resource cost inflation.
Please direct any questions about these three agreements to Nancy Donahoo, Serials and Continuing Resources Manager.
