In celebrating Dia de Los Muertos, I was able to use the laser cutter at the MakerLab to laser cut and design the skulls. I used 12×12 birchwood to laser cut them into 4″ skulls that students could paint or color however they wanted. Traditionally, sugar skulls are made from a white sugar mixture pressed into skull shaped molds used to decorate ofrendas honoring deceased loved ones. To have some element of this, I wanted to provide students an opportunity to decorate a skull and have it be long lasting for them to be used for future celebrations. I am extremely grateful to the MakerLab staff for their support, encouragement and patience in allowing me to create these beautiful skulls for this important holiday.
