The Idaho Media Initiative is hiring interns for the Spring and Fall academic semesters. Interns earn upper-division credit in communication or sociology while building their resume, learning valuable skills and working with media professionals. Ideal interns are communication, media or sociology students who have an excellent understanding of socialization, media systems and media literacy. A passion for education is a must! Media Literacy Education Internship
The Idaho Media Initiative
The Idaho Media Initiative at Boise State University is seeking an intern to assist with media literacy education efforts in the community. The IMI works in partnership with Boise State University to serve as a community resource for news, media pedagogy and professional training through education and innovative partnerships.
Internship Duties
The Media Literacy Education internship will provide a mix of teaching and community relations experience. The intern will execute the following tasks:
- Collaborate with other interns, the IMI administrative director and co-creator and support faculty to develop and implement media literacy curriculum and workshops to be presented to K-12 school students and community members.
- Research, review and design effective pedagogical strategies.
- Create and develop media literacy lesson plans.
- Develop media literacy assessment tools.
- Establish working relationships with community educators.
- Partner with area schools to teach media literacy workshops.
- Other administrative and teaching duties as assigned.
Location
This is a telecommuting position with occasional meetings held on the Boise State University Campus. Teaching duties will be performed at events in the Boise community and in area schools.
Qualifications
The Media Literacy Education intern must have the following attributes and skills:
- Excellent understanding of communication and social theory as it relates to socialization and media systems
- Excellent writing skills, including strong grammar and editing skills
- Excellent public speaking skills
- Ability to work on multiple assignments over the course of a day or week, and shift gears as needed
- Ability to work with minimal supervision – many assignments in this position require the intern to work independently (i.e., writing, research, course design) and to take ownership of his or her role in a project.
- Competency in Microsoft Word (working knowledge of other programs such as Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign and Photoshop is helpful but not required).
- Familiarity with social media and other new media platforms
- Ability to complete tasks effectively
- Ability to demonstrate creativity and initiative
- Ability to interact effectively with others, including a willingness to engage students and community members
- Ability to plan and organize with little supervision
- Ability to maintain a professional attitude
- An interest in media and its effects on individual behavior and society
- A passion for engaging and educating others on media issues

The IMI intern will work in a supportive and nurturing environment where innovation, creativity and forward thinking are valued. The intern will work under direct supervision of the IMI administrative director and in collaboration with the IMI board of directors and founders which includes award winning journalists, professors and university educators. The IMI supports both autonomy and collaboration in a work environment that promotes personal and professional growth.

Public Relations/Communication Internship
The Idaho Media Initiative
The Idaho Media Initiative at Boise State University is seeking an intern to assist the non-profit news organization with public relations and communication efforts related to the launch of the organization and publication of IMI projects. The IMI works in partnership with Boise State University to serve as a community resource for news, media pedagogy and professional training.
Internship Duties
The Public Relations/Communication internship will provide a mix of communications and public relations experience. The intern will help with the following tasks:
- Draft a history of IMI funds, how they were used and their impact in the community.
- Promote and advertise IMI projects to potential grant applicants.
- Promote and advertise IMI projects and services to the community.
- Draft story pitches and press releases for media outlets about IMI events and the impact of IMI services and other projects.
- Assist with IMI promotion, including outreach to the community, partnering organizations and potential funders.
- Draft IMI news stories and content for the IMI website, post the stories to the site, and promote them through the Initiative’s social media outreach and other venues.
- Post IMI grant projects and stories to the IMI website.
- Plan and organize events related to IMI fundraising, civic engagement, educational outreach and reporting projects.
- Other administrative and writing duties as assigned.
