HSSI Grants

Purpose

The mission of the HSSI is to elevate the Humanities and Social Sciences at Boise State through promoting collaborative, multidisciplinary projects that integrate humanistic and social scientific methods, theories, and practices. This call for proposals supports that aim by awarding one-time funds to successful applicants. The types of proposals to be considered are described briefly below.

Award Period

January 1, 2025, through August 8, 2025. Proposals may cover any period of time between those dates.

Process

The deadline for proposal submission is November 8, 2024. The HSSI advisory board, in consultation with the Dean, will review proposals and make funding decisions. Notification for all applications will occur by December 6, 2024. Successful proposals will:

  • center the humanities or social sciences or both in the proposed project;
  • identify outcomes that support the mission of the HSSI;
  • support the college’s mission;
  • demonstrate clarity in focus and goals;
  • present a reasonable budget;
  • value interdisciplinarity and encourage participation of colleagues from across the College.

Types of Proposals Considered and Maximum Budget Requests

The types of proposals to be considered are described briefly below:

  • Workshop or Summer School ($15,000)
    • The HSSI will support one workshop or summer school in 2025.
      • Workshop: mini-conference with internal or external participants with ultimate aim of publication
      • Summer School:one- or two-week intensive program on a defined topic for graduate students and junior faculty
  • Scholarship, Community Building, and Curriculum work (up to $2,500)
    • The HSSI will award multiple grants for short-term, focused projects.
    • The categories are intentionally broad to encourage creativity and wide participation.

Instructions

Fill out each section of the proposal form and submit by November 8, 2024. Be as specific as you can in each section, but do not exceed the word limitations. Please be aware that the final award amount may not be equal to your request and that there are strict limitations on what funding may be used for (see the form for more details).
