Employee Legal Name Changes

If your legal name has changed, the required steps and department process may change depending on your affiliation with the university.  If you are a past or present Boise State University employee you can change your name by two methods – a legal name change or a preferred first name change.  Legal name changes and preferred name changes for students are also noted.

To ensure correct tax reporting to the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration, employees must update their new legal name. Follow this job aid to submit a name change and upload the social security card through Bronco Hub. You must also provide a physical copy of your new Social Security card to the University’s Human Resource Office, located on the southeast corner of Capitol & University. If you are not a current employee or are having difficulty accessing Bronco Hub, please complete the Legal Name Change form with a copy of your new Social Security card and submit both physically to the University’s Human Resources Office. For questions, contact Human Resources at hrs@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-1616.

Preferred First Name Change for Employees and Students

Boise State University provides students and employees with a self-help option for indicating their preferred first name. The preferred name will be often used in place of the person’s legal first name in the university’s systems and business processes. Some systems on campus will continue to use your legal name. Students can follow these instructions to change a preferred first name.

To update student records, Federal financial aid and accurate reporting of tuition, students must update their new legal name through the Registrar’s office. Visit this website for information and a form to request a student name change. For questions, contact the Registrar’s office at regmail@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-4249.
