Purpose

The studio\Blu Center Director is responsible for leading and managing studio\Blu – a partnership of Boise State University (Engineering, Business and Economics, Research & Economic Development and TechHelp), Industry Partners, and the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance.  studio\Blu provides technical and business assistance to manufacturers, entrepreneurs, university researchers and students at Boise State and in the state of Idaho, while providing experiential learning opportunities for multiple disciplines of students.

Level Scope

Directs through subordinate Managers multiple large and complex critical programs impacting broad constituencies across major portions of campus. Identifies objectives, manages very significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with an extremely high degree of autonomy. Accountable for formulating and administering policies and programs for major functions. Operational or program results can affect overall campus wide performance and reputation. Directs through subordinate Managers the development of strategic goals and objectives to achieve accountability and stewardship of university resources in a manner consistent with campus and system wide objectives and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years experience or equivalent including 6 managerial

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability in organizing/managing a workforce development program
  • Experience with leading design and manufacturing businesses with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage a consulting practice, client business development (sales), and partner relationships (private, public – state and federal)
  • Strategic leadership, organizational development and leadership
  • Demonstrated experience with financial leadership (public and private), management and budgeting.
  • Experience in the use of professional methods and tools including: continuous improvement tools (LEAN, Six Sigma, etc.), product development and marketing approaches as well as fabrication/prototyping tools.
  • Demonstrated professional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and make decisions

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the studio/Blu, Center Director must:

Provide vision and leadership on organizational strategic planning and operational management efforts to establish, manage and grow studio\Blu.

  • Establish and manage studio\Blu as a self-sustaining organization at Boise State.
  • Secure new funding and manage on-going and new grants to maintain and grow the studio\Blu program.
  • Lead the studio\Blu organization to fulfill its mission, remain a center in good standing relative to university, state, and federal funders, and remain financially sound.
  • Lead the studio\Blu administrative team to ensure customer satisfaction of federal grant funders, state government, university and other stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain an effective workforce development program based on stakeholder needs and available resources.
  •  Promote and market studio\Blu and experiential learning opportunities across the university and region, particularly in rural areas.

 

Manage studio\Blu client operations in partnership with TechHelp and university partners.

  • Take direct responsibility for facilitating field and university consulting operations, including business development and sales, project oversight and capacity management, monitoring status of projects, and project pricing.
  • Regularly travel to partner and field operations across Idaho to support and expand partner network and programming statewide by securing appropriate partner financial and effort commitment.
  • Coordinate studio\Blu activities with Boise State, other university and higher education units and public agencies across the State of Idaho.
  • Manage studio\Blu brand at Boise State in coordination with partner brands.
  • Advocate for client and employee satisfaction and professional development of staff.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and requiring wearing hearing protection.

Travel Requirement

Position requires to regularly travel across Idaho and periodic travel regionally and nationally
