Purpose
The Assistant Athletic Director/Communications will assist the Associate AD, External Communications in all aspects of the NCAA, conference and institutional procedures. This position oversees all sports media relations associated with the Athletic Department and provides oversight of information about Boise State intercollegiate athletic teams, coaches and players to local, regional and national media.
Level Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees at the entry or intermediate level. Functions as advisor to unit and administration and sets goals and objectives for team members for achievement of operational results. Analyzes and resolves problems through drawing from prior experiences. Interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years experience or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- NCAA Knowledge – Demonstrated knowledge of and compliance with NCAA, conference and university rules and regulations.
- Management Skills – Experience with oversight and management of personnel.
- Media Operations – Experience and understanding of media operations and deadlines, with a background in journalism/public relations.
- Computer Literacy – Basic computer knowledge and competency
- Website Design Experience – Understanding and experience regarding the internal workings of website design
- Communication Skills – This position must have excellent communication skills to work as a high level customer service representative for event patrons.
- Event Management – Administration of large-scale highly visible game management
- Championship Management – Working knowledge and experience administering a championship level athletic event.
- Flexibility – Flexibility to handle irregular hours and short notice tasks
Essential Functions
Key Responsibilities
60% of Time the Athletic Communication Manager must:
- Oversee and manage the publication of information provided to local, regional and national media regarding Boise State Athletics
- Administer adherence with conference and department initiatives
- Main contact for media outlets regarding the assigned sports program
- Oversee process of media requests and interviews for all sports
- Assist in media coordination efforts for conference and national sporting events hosted by Boise State
- Write, coordinate and distribute post game releases and statistics as necessary
- Oversee all Sports Information staff with regards to their designated responsibilities
- Assign sports as deemed best for the department among staff
35% of Time the Athletic Communication Manager
