Purpose

Provide strategic and administrative direction to the programs targeted toward underrepresented populations; provide training and direction to assist the members of the Division of Student Affairs in developing multicultural competency; and create and provide support to programs and services targeted toward identity, ally and leadership development of all students.

Level Scope

Manages a program, regardless of size, that has critical impact upon the campus. Significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, manages significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a very high degree of autonomy. Frequently influences business decisions made by senior leadership. Oversees through subordinate Managers the accountability and stewardship of campus resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Negotiates and  influences others to understand and accept new concepts, practices and approaches.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 8 years experience or equivalent including 5 years managerial experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated multicultural competency, ie: broad-based experience effectively working with and providing service for multiple diverse populations and programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of student development theory – 7 years experience working full time on a college campus in the area of Student Affairs with a significant amount of this time dedicated to the area of multicultural programs and services.
  • Demonstrated experience in development and assessment of programs and services in the context of learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget development and annual planning
  • Demonstrated experience developing innovative programs and services, preferably on a predominantly white campus.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Student Diversity & Inclusion Director must:

  • Develop strategic direction and provide administrative support for Women’s Center, Cultural Center, LGBT Center and other programs that work with underrepresented populations. This includes budget management, strategic planning, goal setting and assessment.
  • Supervise two professional staff, one administrative assistant and numerous graduate students and undergraduate student employees. This includes hiring, training and performance planning for results.
  • Create comprehensive training programs that support the Division of Student Affairs vision of becoming a multiculturally-competent organization.
  • Provide leadership in developing collaborative programs, relationships and initiatives that lead to student success, with specific attention paid to underrepresented populations and historically oppressed groups of students and development of their allies.
  • Assess effectiveness of programs and services in the context of student learning outcomes, campus climate, the university’s strategic plan and retention and graduation rates of underrepresented populations.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
