Purpose

Manages the operations of the Veteran Services Center (VSC), including the development and oversight of all major programs and is Boise State’s designated School Certifying Official by the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) certifying 900+ Veteran student’s enrollment and benefits.

Level Scope

Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. Sets and delegates day-to-day tasks to achieve operational objectives. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or campus policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Problems typically involve a single area, process or constituent group. Ensures accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of veteran affairs/services
  • Experience giving formal presentations or facilitating workshops
  • A highly qualified candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to present information effectively to senior level campus management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Veteran Services Coordinator, Supervisor must:

  • Coordinates, trains and facilitates the functions of the VSC’s staff.
  • Responsible for the development and enhancement of services for Veterans, service members, their dependents and survivors.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of Military-Veteran friendly policies and procedures.
  • Supervise, train, develop and evaluate all VSC employees ensuring compliance with VA guidelines.
  • Ensure successful VA and Idaho State Approving Agent (SAA) audits.
  • Manage and monitor the daily operations of the VSC; develop and implement policies and procedures for student Veterans and engagement with other departments; manage the division budget allocation and grant funds.
  • Analyze and interpret new/pending legislation and information from the Veterans Administration pertaining to Veterans Educational Benefits.
  • Establish and implement short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures.
  • Provide advocacy and assistance in support of student issues and challenges.
  • Direct, develop and coordinate strategies and programs to assist with the enrollment, retention, graduation and employment of Veterans, service members, dependents and survivors.
  • Develop awareness programs and workshops to educate faculty and staff on Veteran issues as they relate to higher education.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
