Engineering Technician, Experimental Systems Overview

Purpose
To build, modify, and maintain scientific, laboratory and prototype equipment used in engineering instruction and research; instruct engineering students in fundamentals of manufacturing processes of machining and welding; perform related work.
Level Scope
Applies skills and job knowledge in area of specialization; may adapt procedures, operations, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet needs of area of specialization; may work on non-routine tasks; resolves issues/makes working decisions within area of specialization or responsibility with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of: mechanical systems; metal working techniques and practices.
Good knowledge of: hydraulic systems.
Some knowledge of: electrical systems.
Experience: using MIG and TIG techniques to weld aluminum and stick welding techniques to weld stainless steel and mild steel; reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
Physical ability to: bend, stoop and lift items weighing up to 50 pounds overhead.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology
- Operation monitoring; watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
- Ability to understand information and ideas and present to others
Essential Functions
Key Responsibilities
60% of Time the Engineering Technician, Experimental Systems must:
Uses drawings, specifications, and oral directions to design, fabricate, modify and repair scientific, laboratory and prototype research equipment such as hydraulic test loops, and mechanical and hydraulic testing and measuring equipment; estimates needs and costs, procures equipment, supplies and materials for projects and laboratory classes; fabricates test specimens; maintains, repairs, and renovates shop machine tools and measuring equipment; implements safe shop procedures; maintains shop inventory; operates and maintains MIG, TIG and wire welders, and lathes, vertical/horizontal mills, drills, grinders, oxyacetylene torches, saws, planers, and presses.
Directs students in the preparation of testing materials; prepares and conducts individual and group classes in welding and metal machining; fabricates and repairs research and instructional scientific hardware, equipment and instrumentation; acts as technical liaison between faculty, university and contractors.
