Purpose

The Organizational Development & Training Manager leads the visionary direction of the individuals focused on Organizational Development and Training for Campus-wide Employee Growth Experience. This position develops and implements learning initiatives across the university by blending learning solutions and specialized programs predicated on adult learning concepts and instructional design techniques to meet functional and organizational development that aligns with University’s People Strategy and/or mission of the University.

 

This position consults with multiple departments to identify, diagnose, and problem solve organizational effectiveness problems and solutions, designs instructional interventions; implements work group intervention strategies, e.g. organizational climate and other miscellaneous surveys, and interventions, coaching, mediation, and mentoring.  Develops facilitation strategies and trains/facilitates in areas such as career development, supervisor training, mandatory training, conflict resolution, team building, skills training, workflow process or organizational change, project management; performs work group facilitation and mediation, coordinate strategic planning sessions and retreats.

Level Scope

Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees at the entry or intermediate level. Functions as advisor to unit and administration and sets goals and objectives for team members for achievement of operational results. Analyzes and resolves problems through drawing from prior experiences. Interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of facilitation methods
  • Current knowledge of supervisor, leadership and managerial skills and experience in a position
  • Good knowledge of web design principles
  • Ability to design, develop, and deliver training programs for diverse employee competencies and prepare blended courses to enhance professional development efforts for adult learners.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

85% of Time the OD & Training Manager must:

  • Plans and directs implementation of university training and development programs that align with the University’s People Strategy through organizational needs analysis, management consultation, and provision of a variety of employee training and development programs; hires and evaluates professional trainers and support staff; develops long range strategies for training and development programs; designs and oversees training records management system; monitors training to ensure quality programs and conformance with department, federal and state requirements. Ensures mandatory training requirements are met. Manages and controls training expenditures (shared leadership, leadership pathways, career development, computer lab, etal.).
  • Project Management: leads or participates in cross functional projects and focuses on resource planning, setting customer experience levels, prioritizing tasks and the design and management of effective measurement processes.
  • Consults with management regarding organizational effectiveness and employee development needs; research and develop or review and recommend use of vendor-based materials or organizational development and system improvement projects; develops and monitors contracts. Works with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to evaluate skill gaps and how to effectively close the gaps. Consults with management regarding organizational effectiveness and employee development needs.
  • Consults with department management across programs to identify, diagnose, and problem solve organizational effectiveness problems and solutions, designs instructional or performance-based interventions; implements work group intervention strategies, e.g., organizational climate surveys and interventions, coaching, mediation, and mentoring; may provide career counseling.
  • Facilitation: develops facilitation strategies and trains/facilitates in areas such as conflict resolution, team building, skills training, 360 evaluations, individual development training, mentoring, culture consultation, de-escalation, workflow process or organizational changes, project management; performs work group facilitation and mediation, coordinate strategic planning sessions and retreats. Facilitates and influences organizational changes such as quality initiatives and organizational reviews; researches new areas and develops proposals to aid top management in exploring and implementing organizational change; coordinate and facilitate strategic planning sessions for Vice Presidents, Directors, and Deans.
  • Effectively uses a variety of media and content in course and program development. Provides adult learning development and consultation services to other departments to assist them with development and maintenance of curriculum, including Train the Trainer sessions.
  • Writes participants and instructor manuals, supplemental materials, job aids, e-learning modules, video and audio-visuals for courses. Facilitates/presents in-person training to adult groups using a variety of training methods.
  • Schedule all training events – identifies facilities, speakers, and participants. Assists with the preparation and monitoring of training funds. Maintains the Learning and Development website and manages online registration system and process.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and requiring wearing hearing protection.
