Purpose

Responsible for the overall management and leadership of an NCAA Division 1-A athletic program consisting of both men’s and women’s sports ensuring compliance with NCAA and conference rules. This position also oversees scheduling and managing events, preparing athletic budgets, fundraising, media relations, hiring coaches/staff, and strategic planning.

Level Scope

Directs through subordinate Managers multiple large and complex critical programs impacting broad constituencies across major portions of campus. Identifies objectives, manages very significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with an extremely high degree of autonomy. Accountable for formulating and administering policies and programs for major functions. Operational or program results can affect overall campus wide performance and reputation. Directs through subordinate Managers the development of strategic goals and objectives to achieve accountability and stewardship of university resources in a manner consistent with campus and system wide objectives and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent plus 10 Years Experience including 6 Years Managerial Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Marketing department and programs.
  • Demonstrated long range planning and facility expansion.
  • Demonstrated strategic financial planning for a multi-million dollar department.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Proven track record of fundraising.
  • Proven track record of excellent public relations experience.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Executive Director, Athletics must:

  • Planning: Set goals and create plans and programs for the entire Athletic Department, including all capital improvements, and long range planning.
  • Staffing: Hiring and supervision of a large department that includes coaches and administrative staff. Conduct weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly meetings with staff. Responsible for staff evaluations and salary recommendations.
  • Directing: Provides communications, motivation, and leadership to the department. Ensure compliance with NCAA conference and institutional rules and regulations. Maintain an educational environment for all student-athletes.
  • Organizing: Dividing up the work in a structured framework. Work with central administration on campus, booster groups, media, alumni, parents, students and directors on campus.
  • Fundraising: Coordinate and implement department fundraising and promotional activities. Meet one on one with major donors. Plan and define major capital fundraising projects.
  • Budgeting: Oversee department budget that is fiscally responsible and in line with the university mission, department goals and Title IX requirements.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.

Travel Requirement

This position will travel frequently with sports teams which may require overnight travel. This position will also travel to all NCAA and Conference meetings and conferences.
