Purpose

Responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and reliable environment that ensures consistent quality operation of Campus Recreation.

Level Scope

Manages a large team typically consisting of both experienced professionals and subordinate Managers. Focuses on tactical and operational plans with short to mid term focus; significant responsibility to achieve broadly stated goals through subordinate Managers. Determines objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Requires broad management and leadership knowledge to lead a project or program teams in one dept/job family. Proactively assesses risk to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Determines campus strategies for a program with campus wide impact.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 7 years experience or equivalent including 3 years managerial experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Two years of experience providing leadership to a department of Campus Recreation, or similar, at a Coordinator/Manager level or higher
  • Experience supporting a facility with a pool and aquatics program
  • Experience developing and leading departmental risk management initiatives
  • Experience supervising university or recreation custodial, and maintenance professionals
  • Knowledge of contemporary university or recreation risk management and an excellent working knowledge of industry “best practices”
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility and ability to oversee multiple budgets
  • Strong conflict management skills and the ability to de-escalate confrontation
  • Exemplary customer service skills with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of customers, colleagues, and personnel
  • Experience working with a recreational based software system

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Campus Recreation, Associate Director must:

  • Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of permanent, and part-time, classified and student staff.
  • Serve as the organizer of a coordinated and unified system of maintenance and custodial delivery for each area of campus recreation.
  • Assist with CPR and First Aid training of Campus Recreation employees
  • Coordinate, review and assess all Student Recreation Center risk management planning and administration for Campus Recreation
  • Maintain and revise operations and risk management policy manuals for all facility
    areas on a yearly basis
  • Oversee all incident and accident and critical incident reporting, including staff training and development surrounding incidents and accidents, sharing reports with appropriate staff members, follow up and assessment as necessary
  • Develop and evaluate policies and procedures to ensure that facility use is in compliance with established departmental and university guidelines.
  • Monitor, maintain, and evaluate all assigned accounts related to areas of supervision
  • Possess a working knowledge of, and be familiar with, the overall departmental budget process and projection

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
