Purpose

Responsible for assisting Boise State University in meeting federal mandates regarding accommodating students with disabilities.

Level Scope

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience.  Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.  May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.  Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • National certification in American Sign Language (ASL), proficiency in various other sign systems (manually coded English, Pidgin Sign Language, etc), knowledge of transcribing systems (CART, TypeWell)
  • Knowledge of best practices regarding interpreting and transcribing at the post-secondary level
  • Expertise in Deaf culture, disability service delivery at the post-secondary level, the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and familiarity with documentation (such as audiograms, reports from speech language pathologists and other medical personnel).
  • Supervisory experience
  • Excellent oral, written and signed communication skills.
  • Strong mediation skills and experience.
  • RID or NAD Interpreter Certification.

Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities

60% of Time the Accessibility Coordinator, Senior must:

  • Complete intake interviews and determine thoroughness/appropriateness of documentation
  • Facilitate student success and support inclusive excellence by administering and coordinating services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Establish yearly contracts with Deaf and hard-of-hearing service providers
  • Supervise staff interpreters
  • Schedule contracted interpreting, captioning, and transcribing services
  • Provide interpreting services for student-faculty/and or student-staff meetings, classes and/or University events on an as needed basis
  • Program support, development, and assessment
  • Act as initial contact for student/faculty/campus department questions and concerns regarding accommodations and disabilities
  • Act as lead liaison for Boise State Housing and Residence Life
  • Act as lead liaison for the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind and Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • Facilitate training/mentor new and existing staff on developments

35% of Time the Accessibility Coordinator, Senior

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Some positions may involve frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; some positions may involve moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 70 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; working in all weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels and require wearing hearing protection.
