Leave and Pay Questions
What are my accrued leave options?
When you separate from Boise State, you have several options regarding your accrued vacation and sick leave. It’s important to review these options as soon as possible, as they may affect the taxes on your final paycheck and your last working day at the university.
Accrued Vacation Leave: You will receive a payout for unused vacation leave in your final paycheck, unless you are transferring to another state agency. You also have the option to defer some or all of your vacation payout as a pre-tax contribution to a supplemental retirement plan, which can help reduce your taxable income for the current year. No deferrals will be completed without sufficient notice or after an employee has left the university. Failure to alert our benefits team in a timely manner may result in a vacation payout.
Accrued Sick Leave: Sick leave is not paid out when you separate from the university. However, if you transfer directly to another Idaho state agency, your accumulated sick leave will transfer with you. Additionally, if you separate but return to Boise State or another Idaho state agency within three years, your sick leave balance can be reinstated. For more information and assistance, please contact the Benefits team at (208) 426-4429 or via email at benefits@boisestate.edu.
When will I receive my final paycheck and W2 form?
Boise State is on a bi-weekly payroll schedule with payments made to our employees every other Friday. As a result, final paychecks will be issued at least two weeks after your last day of employment. For specific dates, please refer to our payroll calendar. Please fill out this form to request your paychecks and/or W2 forms from Boise State University. This form is for former Boise State employees, not current employees. Current employees can access these items in BroncoHub.
End of Benefits Questions
What is an exit interview?
An exit interview is a meeting with the Employee Relations team in HR to gather feedback about your experience at Boise State, helping to improve the workplace for current and future employees. An online exit survey is also available to collect this information.
Are you transferring to another state of Idaho agency?
If you are transferring to another State of Idaho employer, your sick and vacation benefits will transfer with you if there is no break in service between jobs. You may be required to provide your new HR department with a list of your benefits through Boise State. This information can be found on your paycheck stub.
When does my Health, Basic Life, and Disability insurance coverage end?
Health, life, and disability insurance coverage ends at the end of the month following your date of separation. If your last day of work is before the 15th of the month, health insurance will continue through the end of that month. If your last day is on or after the 15th, coverage will extend through the end of the next month. For example, if your last day of work is June 20th, your health coverage will continue through July 31st.
How can I continue my optional insurance coverages?
If you have optional insurance benefits with premiums deducted from your paycheck, you may be able to continue coverage after your separation. To do so, you’ll need to contact the insurance provider directly to make alternative billing arrangements. Contact those providers as soon as possible to ensure there is no gap in your coverage.

What happens to my Health Savings Account (HSA)?
You can still access your HSA funds after employment. You have until the end of the plan year to incur eligible expenses, and all claims must be submitted within the plan’s standard run-out period.
What is COBRA and how does it work after my coverage ends?
