One of the primary goals of Boise State’s strategic plan, Blueprint for Success, is to foster a thriving community. To build upon this goal, Boise State Human Resources and Workforce Strategy (HR) launched an Employee Experience Survey to engage with campus employees and gather valuable feedback.
National and global trends show concerning declines in employee engagement and wellbeing. Boise State wants to understand how its own employees are doing.
- Employee Engagement in the U.S. dropped to its lowest level in a decade, with only 31% of U.S. employees engaged (2024 Gallup Employee Engagement Update).
- Work wellbeing levels declined globally, even worse than the pandemic, with stress as a leading factor (2024 Indeed Global Work Wellbeing Report).
- Only one in five employees globally are thriving at work (2024 Indeed Global Work Wellbeing Report).

In 2023-24, turnover rates at Boise State were 17% for classified employees, 12% for professional employees, and 5% for faculty.
In 2021-22, during the last survey cycle, turnover rates at Boise State were 27% for classified employees, 17% for professional employees and 5% for faculty. Since then, faculty turnover has remained static while turnover for classified staff has decreased by 10%, and turnover among professional staff has decreased by 5%.
By examining national and global trends, analyzing recent campus survey results, and reviewing employee turnover rates, Boise State University leaders can develop strategies to improve leadership, culture, and engagement across campus divisions and colleges, with the goal of improving employee retention rates and overall employee satisfaction.
