Boise State University On-Campus Apartments Update (FAQ)
Why are we making these changes?
In recent years, our department has been contacted about offering more options for graduate students and those with families. While we offer many on-campus housing options for undergraduate students, many of our graduate students and undergraduate students with families struggle to find affordable housing. We are making a pivot and updating the eligibility requirements in the on-campus apartments to better meet the needs of these specific student populations.
What are the new eligibility requirements for living in the on-campus apartments?
Graduate Students:
- Graduate students (with or without dependents) are eligible for housing in the on-campus apartments if they meet both of the following requirements:
- Taking a minimum of 9 credits
- In good standing with the University
- If adding dependents:
- Dependents are defined as immediate family: father, mother, sister, brother, spouse, domestic partner, or child
Undergraduate Students:
- Undergraduate students are eligible to live in the on-campus apartments if they meet all three of the following requirements:
- Have dependents (as defined above) OR are 26 years or older at the time of move-in
- Are taking a minimum of 12 credits
- Are in good standing with the University
What if I currently reside in the apartments and no longer meet the eligibility requirements?
If you are an undergraduate student without dependents or are under 26 years old, you will be allowed to remain in the apartments until December 31, 2025, by signing a new amended Housing Agreement for the term of June 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025.
If I am no longer eligible for the apartments, will I be required to pay a cancellation fee if I choose to leave my apartment before the end of the license period?
If you move out on or before May 31, 2025, the $800 early termination fee will be waived.
Will I be required to pay a cancellation fee if I choose to leave my apartment after the start of the new license period?
If you move out after May 31, 2025, the $800 early termination fee will be applied, unless you move into a Residence Hall from your apartment.
Will my current rent change if I have a roommate who doesn’t meet the eligibility requirements?
If an ineligible undergraduate (e.g., without dependents) moves out before May 31, 2025, the remaining eligible resident(s) in the shared unit will not be responsible for absorbing the entire rent cost for the remainder of the license period. They will continue paying the same rent rate as before the move-out, until the end of the license period.
Will my rent change if I choose to renew my license agreement after my roommate moves out?
If the apartment license agreement is renewed, residents will be charged the full apartment rent beginning June 1, 2025 (the first day of the new license term).
Will my rent change if my roommate moves out after the start of the new license period?
If an ineligible undergraduate student moves out after May 31, 2025, during the amended Housing Agreement term, the remaining eligible resident(s) will be responsible for covering the entire unit rent, or may choose to move out.
Can I add a new roommate to offset the rent charges for the remainder of the license period?
No additional roommates will be allowed to move into units after January 1, 2025. Because of this, current rent rates will remain the same until the end of the contract period (May 31, 2025).
What if I live in an apartment with another eligible student?
In units where there are currently two graduate students living as roommates, we will be phasing out the option of having roommates in the apartments. When renewals occur, only one student will be selected as the primary Housing Contract holder. This student will assume responsibility for the unit until their contract end date, at which time both students will be expected to vacate the apartment.
If the roommate who is the Housing Contract holder moves out, can I “take over” the contract and continue living in the apartment by myself?
Housing contracts cannot be transferred from one student to another. They will need to vacate the apartment at the same time as the Housing Contract holder. If the second roommate wishes to continue living in the unit, they will need to apply to housing via the standard process outlined on our website.
If the roommate who is not the Housing Contract holder moves out, can I (the Housing Contract holder) add a new roommate?
The remaining resident(s) in any unit will not be allowed to move in additional roommates during the remainder of their contract period.
