Internships are an awesome way to strengthen your professional skills. We’re glad you are interested in this experience! Here’s everything that you need to know about finding an internship as a history student.

How do I locate an internship?

Contact the Department Internship Coordinator

Reach out to the internship coordinator regarding internship opportunities! There may be something available where you already volunteer or there may be a position opening at a new organization. Talk with the coordinator and a potential supervisor about projects, tasks, and work that will help develop your skills as a historian.

What sorts of internships will meet my personal and professional needs?

Interested in archival work?

Consider applying for positions in local museums, archives, small organizations, or individual researchers. Job searches could include: transcriber, curator, oral historian, accession assistant, or archivist.

Interested in public history?

Consider applying for positions in government, nonprofits, museums, or historic sites. Job searches could include: museum docent, tour writer, programs specialist, outreach coordinator, or educational specialist.

Interested in historic preservation?

Consider applying for positions in local government, historic preservation groups, historic sites, or nonprofits. Job searches could include: historic preservationist, Section 106 reviewer, National Register of Historic Places reviewer, or independent researcher.
