2014 President’s Writing Awards Winners Announced

The annual contest was open to all work prepared for Boise State undergraduate courses in the Spring 2013 through Spring 2014 semesters. Two prizes were awarded in each category: first prize, $200; second prize, $100. Categories included Critical Analysis, Fiction, Campus Read, Creative Nonfiction, Research Based, Poetry, First-Year Writing and Multilingual First-Year Writing.

The 2014 winners are:

Critical Analysis

First Place: Jennifer Brooks for “The Repression of Dream Work”

Second Place: Taylor Kerns for “Fathoms Deep: On Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea as a Map to Gender Identity Struggle”

First Year Writing

First Place: Cora Barnes for “Nonverbal Behavior and Communication in Autistic Individuals”

Second Place: Jordan Osborne for “Fear and Loathing on Our Minds”

Creative Nonfiction

First Place: Pamela Craig (History Major) for “Mining for Monahan in Idaho: The Truth/Untruth about Josephine/Johanna/Joe/Jo”

Second Place: Mitchell Lewis for “Playing without Fear”

Researched Based

First Place: Brian M. Lawless for “Study, Analysis and Interpretation of Stream Data, Geologic, and Geomorphic Features of Selected Streams in the Boise Foothills”

Second Place: Rebecca Carter (History Major) for “Ann Landers’s Advice and the Sexual Revolution”

Multilingual First-Year Writing

First Place: Keshia Mejorado-Mendez for “Escribiendo Para Todos”

Second Place: Anas Abdullah Alshaaer for “Children’s Rights in Saudi Arabia”

Fiction

First Place: Lacey Rowland for “All We Need”
