Health Services is committed to supporting students who struggle with ADHD by offering screenings to substantiate a diagnosis and determine the best possible care. A student qualifies for medication management, if a diagnosis is substantiated. If you have received a diagnosis for ADHD and/or have received medication management from a community mental health provider and would like to transfer care to Health Services, please refer to the following screening procedures:
First Step
- If there is a prior, formal diagnosis of ADHD from a previous provider in the community, records of the evaluation can/will be requested through a signed Authorization to Obtain or Disclose Protected Health Information to the community provider, if this has not already been completed.
- If or when documentation is received, regarding a formalized diagnosis, it will be determined if there is a substantiated diagnosis via accepted providers, which are either a psychiatrist or a psychologist through formal assessment/testing. If it is determined appropriate to transfer care to Health Services, a referral Psychiatry will be made.
- If a diagnosis is not substantiated by an accepted provider, a referral to participate in ADHD screening will be made.
Evaluation Process
- Clients that do not have a previous diagnosis, or their documentation does not meet requirements, will be scheduled for an ADHD screening appointment, which includes a mental health intake assessment. This appointment can last up to 60 minutes.
- If the client meets minimum criteria for a potential ADHD diagnosis, they will be given an ADHD packet to complete and return to the screening provider, and formal testing will be scheduled.
Testing Process
- There is a fee for the testing. Your insurance plan may cover the fee. You will want to check with your insurance provider. UHS will ask the billing office to assist with prior authorization for testing, but any fees not covered or declined will be the responsibility of the client.
- Once testing is completed, the tester will determine if ADHD is substantiated and the best approach to care, which may include a referral to Psychiatry for medication management as well as other resources that may be of benefit.
- If the ADHD is not substantiated, other resources will be offered.
