BASICS

The BASICS program maintains a non-confrontational, non-labeling, and non-judgmental environment to encourage students to explore their alcohol use to reduce risky behavior and harmful consequences of alcohol abuse. BASICS is appropriate for anyone who uses alcohol or other drugs. It provides a structured opportunity for students to assess their own risk and identify potential changes that could help reduce risk for developing future problems.

Time Commitment

BASICS involves two one-on-one sessions with a University Health Services health educator and the student. The two BASICS sessions are typically one week apart with additional requirements/ homework in between the two (2) appointments.

Session 1 (approx. 60 minutes):  During this session, the health educator will establish rapport with the student, while being oriented to the program. The student will also answer questions and complete an online questionnaire.

Session 2 (approx. 60 minutes): The student will get a personalized feedback profile that is based on the information received from interviews and questionnaires completed during the first session. Students will see how their use of alcohol or other drugs compares to other Boise State students and, if appropriate, identify potential changes that could work to help prevent future health, social, and legal risks.

Registration

Students must schedule the appointment in person. Students will not be permitted to schedule a BASICS appointment over the phone. To schedule, go to the second (2nd) floor of the Norco Building and ask to schedule a BASICS appointment.

Students who are required to complete the BASICS program will also be required to pay a $75 fee due at the time of each session.

Confidentiality

The information students share during the BASICS sessions is confidential. Mandated students will be asked to acknowledge a release of information statement that will allow Health Services to verify completion of program with the Dean of Students Office.
