What is Counseling?

Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change for optimal mental health.

Types of Counseling:

  • Individual Counseling is a process through which a person works one-on-one with a trained therapist to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors, work through difficult life challenges, traumatic experiences, and/or identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change. Counseling also helps the person cope with a potential diagnosis such as anxiety and depression.
  • Multi-Person Counseling is a type of therapy that helps couples, roommates, friends, etc. recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationships. Through multi-person counseling, you can make thoughtful decisions about rebuilding and/or strengthening your relationship.
  • ​Family Counseling is a type of counseling that helps family members improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen familial relationships in a safe environment.
  • Group counseling provides an opportunity to share experiences, learn perspectives, and experiment with new behaviors in a safe and supportive environment. Counseling groups are led by one or more professional mental health counselors. Groups may focus on interpersonal connections including active listening techniques, giving and receiving constructive feedback, supporting one another with similar experiences or shared identities Group Counseling can also focus on learning skills to better manage strong emotions and help increase social skills.
  • Psychoeducation refers to the process of providing education and information to those seeking or receiving mental health services or for those wanting to understand more about mental health issues. Psychoeducation means providing in-depth information, tools, and skills to students, faculty, and staff in a variety of settings and formats.
