Uwe Reischl, professor for the School of Allied Health Sciences Department of Community and Environmental Health, participated in the Engage Cuba State Council Summit meeting held in Havana, Cuba, Nov. 14-18. The summit was attended by U.S. legislators, business leaders, service entrepreneurs and university faculty. The purpose of the summit was to identify opportunities for future U.S.-Cuba collaboration in technology transfer, educational exchanges, agricultural trade and an expansion of public health services in Cuba through the use of new telehealth technologies.
The summit included a U.S.-Cuba policy review presented by Jeffrey DeLaurentis, U.S. ambassador to Cuba. Supporting meetings were held with Cuban government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Investments and the Ministry of Education. Additional interactions included personal meetings with Cuban small business entrepreneurs, university professors, medical school administrators and local medical services providers. The State Council Summit identified the economic, educational and social benefits that can be achieved, both in the U.S. and in Cuba, when the current Cuba trade embargo is lifted.
