At the recent annual conference for the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH) in Glenwood Springs, Colo., Shelley Lucas, faculty in the Department of Kinesiology, presented her paper, “Spinning Wheels or Shifting Gears? Marking Time in Women’s Cycling History.”
In “Spinning Wheels or Shifting Gears?,” Lucas examines the historical context, progress and future of women’s cycling as 2014 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the women’s Olympic road race and the Women’s Cycling Association prepares to celebrate its first anniversary. Lucas questions how linear the progress toward equitable and meaningful opportunities and experiences in women’s cycling has been, using the cycling metaphor of shifting gears throughout the journey.
