Awards
The College of Health Sciences is accepting proposals to support pilot studies that have a high likelihood to result in applications for federally sponsored research. The maximum amount for any one award is $20,000. Depending on the size of the requests, we plan to make at least three awards.
Key Dates
- Friday, November 15, 2024 (5pm, MST): Deadline to email application and abbreviated CV(s) of PI(s) to the Office of the Acting Associate Dean for Research (bobwood@boisestate.edu)
- Friday December 13, 2024: Notification of award
- Friday December 14, 2025: Final Report and award close out (carry forwards not allowed)
- June 30, 2026: Latest expected proposal submission to a federally sponsored research program.
Eligibility
Investigators must hold a full-time faculty position in the College of Health Science, and must provide an IRB study number for the planned work (proposals that have been submitted to the Boise State IRB are acceptable). Studies requiring IRB approval from outside entities must already be approved.
Allowable Expenses
These funds are to be used for equipment, supplies, student support, or core/recharge center support necessary to complete the project. Because the College of Health Sciences already provides each school with $50,000 for research support (in FY’25), this program does not fund faculty time, conference travel, or publication costs. The funds can be used to defray in-state travel necessary for data collection.
Application Requirements
All elements should be formatted using no less than 0.5” margins, with text that is single-spaced, using no smaller than 11-point font. Any figures or tables may use no less than 9-point font, including legends. Documents may be formatted as .doc, .docx, or .pdf.
Specific Aims
No more than 1-page outlining the research question and hypotheses to be tested, along with summary statements as to the approach and significance
Significance and Approach
No more than 3 pages that provide:
- the justification for the planned work, which could include any feedback from previous manuscripts or grant proposals;
- the approach, including study design, and methods for data collection, reduction and analysis;
- a brief description of how the planned work will support a future sponsored research application, including specific sponsors, programs, award amounts, and projected dates for submission.
Investigative Team:
No more than 1 page per PI
- Detailed description of the background of the PI(s), including: their experience with the planned work, highlighting published or unpublished findings from recent investigations, their experience with sponsored projects of any sort, evidence of their participation in the research mission of the college and/or institution.
- Brief summary of the contribution of other key personnel or student involvement.
Budget Narrative
(approximately ½ page). This narrative should describe
- Assets already in place: including personnel, equipment and supplies that may already be available to support the project.
- Planned expenses covered under this proposal: effort and responsibilities of any student workers, cost and use of any research Cores, (also including statistical support), supplies, equipment, in-state travel necessary for data collection
Evaluation of application
Scientific Review of the Application will include
- Investigator(s) demonstrate a need for the work
- Investigator(s) propose an approach that is sound and feasible
- Investigator(s) make a compelling argument that the work is of interest to federal sponsors
- Investigator(s) demonstrate that the planned work is a logical, if not necessary step in moving towards a fundable study proposal
- Investigator(s) demonstrate familiarity with and productivity in the area of work, commensurate with their rank
- The budget is reasonable and adequate to support the planned work.
Administrative Review will include
- The size of the budget request compares favorably to the F&A that the college would receive from planned future federally sponsored research proposals, if funded.
- Preference will be given to early career investigators and investigators who regularly participate in other college and university research activities.
